Mathematical outreach and popularization activities in France

France mathematicians have been involved in all kinds of populatization and outreach activities for many years, and even decades. Soon there will be a website dedicated to show the richness and variety of all those efforts. Currently there is a national network created by the CNRS to try to coordinate efforts of outreach in the direction of the general public, students and schools. It is the so-called AUDIMATH. Recently a foundation has been created in Lyon to follow the action of Audimath at a larger and more global scale. It is called the Fondation Blaise Pascal.

Below you can find the links to these two institutions, but also to other institutions that organise a large number of activities of outreach in Mathematics in France.

AuDiMATH

Audimath is a network created by the CNRS National Institute for Mathematical Sciences and their Interactions (INSMI) and intended to provide support to all players in the academic community involved in the development of activities to disseminate Mathematics to non-academics.

Fondation Blaise Pascal

In the future the Fondation Blaise Pascal will take over part of the activities of Audimath and will coordinate and centralize many of the activities of outreach in Mathematics in France. Still building up.

Florilège de la popularisation des mathématiques

This website contains a very comprehensive catalog of events, activities, publications and math-in-the-media news linked to the popularization of Mathematics in France or in French. At its launch in April 2018 more than 1300 entries well already present. Its content will grow steadily, nourished by new events and publications and by items contributed by the readers. This website is currently independent, but eventually it will be hosted and maintained by the Fondation Blaise Pascal.

ANIMATH

The aim of Animath is to promote Mathematics in schools, high schools and also, but more marginally, at the university level. It pays particular attention to the development of workshops, the organisation of student clubs and of mathematical competitions in institutions and schools, in order to foster the participation of large number of students, girls and boys, in this type of activity.

FSMP

The Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris is an excellence network in Mathematics and theoretical Computer Science in Paris. It federates 14 laboratories in mathematical sciences, 23 Inria teams, and gathers more than 1800 researchers among which 900 permanents, involving 5 Fields medalists, 20 members of Academy of Science, and many recipients of national and international prizes. It participates also to some outreach activities.

IHP

Located in the heart of the 5th arrondissement of Paris, the Henri Poincaré Institute is one of the oldest and most dynamical in the world. It hosts thematic trimesters, a large number of conferences and workshops, hosts the Henri Poincaré Chair and a wonderful library, with very old historical documents and geometrical "forms". It organises many actions directed to the general public and to pupils and students.

Fondation Hadamard

The purpose of the Fondation Mathématiques Jacques Hadamard (FMJH) is to bring together the mathematicians of the Saclay campus in order to form a research community of the highest caliber. The foundation seeks to illustrate through outreach activities the exceptional vitality of research mathematics through its partnerships with students, businesses, and the international community.

SMF

The Société Mathématique de France (SMF) is one of the learned society dedicated to Mathematics in France. It has an editorial activity (Annales Scientifiques de l’ENS, Astérisque, …) and organizes several actions directed to a large audience.

SMAI

The Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) is one of the learned society dedicated to Mathematics and more particularly to applied Mathematics and relation with industry. It has an editorial activity (ESAIM journal) and participates in actions towards the general public.

SFdS

The Société française de Statistique (SfdS) is the learned society dedicated to Statistic. It has an editorial activity and carries out several popularization actions including the cafés de la statistique.

The 18 CCSTI

The CCSTI are centers of mediation of Technical and Industrial Scientific Culture in partnership with the world of research, education, companies, and the associative sector. They play a role of territorial assembler with local communities, and national and international structures. They organize exhibitions on scientific topics

Centre Sciences

Centre Sciences is the CCSTI of Centre region.
